Give the dogs a break...

You have all probably heard about the man bitten by the census workers dog. Why the guy had his dog at work with him is anyone's guess, but the fact remains, it bit somebody.

Here's my complaint, it doesn't ever matter what kind of dog bites a human, on the news they show a picture of a Pit Bull or a Rottweiler. Initially, the news reported that the census workers dog was a pit bull. I've seen the pictures of the dog. It wasn't even close to a Pitt Bull, no resemblance at all. They then changed the story to Rottweiler. While the dog does have the coloration and markings of a Rottweiler, it is not. It may be PART Rottweiler, but it is not a pure bred dog.

These are pure bred, 100% Rottweiler. Damn fine looking dogs. They look nothing like the little skinny runt in the pictures of the census workers dog. His dog could actually even be part Doberman, which has virtually the same markings as the Rottweiler.

This is a Pit Bull, for those of you who have never seen one. They are powerful animals and many people breed them for nefarious purposes, like dog fighting. But by nature they are not bad dogs. They aren't the smartest of breeds, but they are loyal and protective.

German Shepherds, Akitas and Chihuahuas combined, bite thousands of people a year and you don't see them plastered all over the news. You don't hear about most of the German Shepherd bites because a lot of them are law enforcement dogs biting suspects.

I have had 4 Rottweilers in my life, I have one now. They are very intelligent, as a matter of fact, they rank number 9 on the 10 most intelligent dog breeds. They are very loyal and very protective. I would trust my Rottweiler to protect my children with his life. Here are a couple of pictures of my little guy.

One upside to the bad reputation of Rottweilers and Pit Bulls is it will make a bad guy think twice about doing bad things around your house. Nothing makes a better deterent than a 140 pound Rottweiler greeting an intruder at the door. It may give you the few extra seconds you need to put a plan in place, whether that plan is grabbing a bat, golf club or a Mossberg 590A1 with 10 rounds of 00 Buck shot.
